"Where does your water…..shed?"

Approximately 190 fifth grade students from: Blackduck, Kelliher, Northome, Ponemah, Red Lake, and Saint Mary’s Mission Schools had the opportunity to learn about the Red Lake watershed. The students learned how to model a watershed and followed the path of their storm water drains through their city. Students learned how their storm water exits their city which flows into Upper and Lower Red Lake.

Staff from the NRCS and Red Lake DNR stenciled over 50 storm drains in these communities with the messages “Protect the Red Lake Watershed - Only rain down the drain” and “Be the Solution - Storm Water Pollution- Protect the Red Lake Watershed.”  The goal was to raise public awareness of storm water and its path of pollution to their local lakes and streams.  Anything that is “rained” down a storm drain is not treated.  This means that oil, antifreeze, paint, grass clippings, household waste, pet wastes, or any other trash on streets and sidewalks goes directly into a nearby stream, river, or lake.

The students also decorated their own paper bags with messages about nonpoint source pollution such as: “Only rain down the drain” or “keep our storm drains clean.” The bags were then distributed to local grocery stores to help spread the message.
